Blair Chief Fundraiser Arrested By Police

NewsRoom | July 13 2006

Lord Levy, the chief fundraiser for Britain's Prime Minister Tony Blair's Labour Party, has been arrested by police probing allegations that state awards had been given in return for cash.

The Labour party has come under pressure after it said it had received more than $40 million of loans from 12 businessmen, some of whom were nominated for seats in Britain's unelected upper house of parliament.

Lord Levy is Mr Blair's Middle East envoy and tennis partner.

He denies any wrongdoing and says the police are using their powers of arrest unnecessarily.

Lord Levy was later released on bail without charge pending further enquiries.
