Refuses To Consider Resolution To Fire UW-Madison Instructor MADISON, Wis. -- The state Assembly on Wednesday refused to take up a resolution calling on the University of Wisconsin-Madison to fire an instructor who believes the U.S. government orchestrated the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Rep. Steve Nass, R-Whitewater, had drafted a resolution condemning UW-Madison's decision on Monday to clear Kevin Barrett to teach an introductory course on Islam in the fall and asking the school to immediately cut ties with him. The Republican-controlled Assembly was in a brief session on Wednesday to approve new employment contracts with unions representing state workers but adjourned in the afternoon without taking up the matter. Nass said he decided not to push for the resolution because he would not have votes of two-thirds of the Assembly's 98 members to bring up the resolution. Republicans control the chamber 59-39. However, he said he would continue to gather signatures of lawmakers and send the resolution blasting Barrett's "academically dishonest views" to the university as early as next week. Barrett is active in a group of scholars who believe, among other things, the twin towers were blown up by U.S. government operatives. His remarks in recent weeks have drawn widespread criticism from Nass, Republican gubernatorial candidate Mark Green and Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle. UW-Madison Provost Patrick Farrell said Monday that Barrett was a qualified instructor and that his unconventional views should be protected under the principle of academic freedom. ---------------------------------------------------
