Iraq war veteran drowns in Lake Berryessa SF Chronicle / Vanessa Hua | July 6 2006 A man who drowned in Lake Berryessa Monday afternoon after jumping from a cliff popular for leaping into the water was an Iraq war veteran. Chasen Shirley, 24, served two tours of duty in Iraq as a Marine and worked at a private security company before returning to the United States on June 27, his friends told authorities. Formerly of Texas, Shirley moved to Sacramento to join friends and had jumped numerous times from the rocky outcropping near Pope Creek Bridge, about 40 to 50 feet above the water, Napa County Sheriff's Capt. John Robertson said. Around 4:30 p.m. Monday, he jumped, landed sideways in the water and did not surface, Robertson said. His friends quickly jumped into the water, which has little current, and tried to find Shirley before calling authorities, Robertson said. Sheriffs arrived about 10 minutes later and eventually called a dive team, which recovered Shirley's body around 8 p.m. Monday. There is no law against jumping off the rock, Robertson said, but a sign on the trail warns that the area may be dangerous. About six people drown each year in Lake Berryessa. Two other men have died this year after leaping into the lake, including a Dixon resident who landed on the ground. --------------------------------------------------- Prison Planet.tv: The Premier Multimedia Subscription Package: Download and Share the Truth!
