Russia, China to hold first-ever joint army exercise next year
Beijing, July 7 (PTI) China and Russia have agreed to hold the first-ever joint army exercise next year as part of their efforts to face "new challenges" and step up their strategic ties, the state media reported today.
The decision to hold a military exercise follows the first joint naval exercise in 1999, Xinhua news agency quoted military officials currently travelling with a top Chinese military officer in Moscow.
However, the memorandum, signed by Russian Defence minister Sergi Ivanov and General Guo Boxiong, vice-chairman of the central military commission of China, did not disclose the exact location, date or scale of the exercise.
The Chinese delegation, led by Guo, said the exercise aims to confront current new challenges with joint efforts and safeguard world peace.
The scope of the joint military exercise will be decided by officials of the two sides later, the report said.
During the meeting, Ivanov hailed the development of military cooperation with China, Xinhua said.
Guo arrived in Moscow on Monday on a five-day official goodwill visit to Russia.
Relations between the Russian and Chinese military have enjoyed smooth development and effective bilateral cooperation and exchanges have been achieved, Ivanov said.
