Are Coca-Cola's GPS Cans Spy Devices?
NEW YORK -- Some of the nation's military bases are on the lookout for what they see as a possible security threat -- one that looks like a can of Coca-Cola, because that's just what it is.
Specially rigged Coke cans, part of a summer promotion, contain cell phones and global positioning chips. That has officials at some installations worried the cans could be used to eavesdrop. So they're instituting protective measures.
Coca-Cola Co. says such concerns are nothing but fizz.
A spokesman says the special cans are clearly marked. He says the cell phone and GPS cans can only contact Coke's prize center, and can't be used to eavesdrop.
Nonetheless, military bases are asking soldiers to examine their Coke cans before bringing them in to classified meetings.
