The United States must investigate the controversial interrogation tactics, some seen as torture, used under former US president George W. Bush, a leading US lawmaker said Thursday.
"Looking at what has been done is necessary," Democratic House of Representatives Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, an ally of President Barack Obama, told reporters, when asked whether such practices ought to be investigated.
"That does not mean that I think the Obama administration has any intent to sort of revisit all of these issues. I think he's more intent on what should be done, and moving forward on what we're going to have as a practice for our country," said Hoyer.
Hoyer, the number two Democrat in the House, did not speak directly to whether US interrogators who carried out questioning using tactics like the controlled drowning of "waterboarding" might be in legal jeopardy.
