Obama: Suspend Guantanamo Trials

Barack Obama has ordered prosecutors to seek a suspension of military trials at the controversial Guantanamo Bay.

Military judges are expected to rule on the request today, which would affect the military trials of five alleged plotters of the 9/11 attacks.

The case of the last Westerner held at the facility for allegedly killing a US soldier with a hand grenade in Afghanistan would also be affected.

"In the interests of justice, and at the direction of the President of the United States and the secretary of defence, the government respectfully requests the military commission grant a continuance of the proceedings," said documents filed on Tuesday.

Lawyer Clayton Trivett is tasked with presenting the motion to two judges.
