Huckabee, Paul trade jokes and talk substance with Leno & Letterman

Naturally, there are some laughs in the Late Show with David Letterman appearance that Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee taped late this afternoon.

He jokes about his experiences as a young radio DJ and says Dave looks better without the beard that the host apparently shaves off during tonight's show.

But, according to a transcript sent to us by CBS, Huckabee also has some more serious thoughts about his presidential rivals:

Letterman asks about the emotional moment that Democratic Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton had earlier today, when her voice cracked and eyes appeared to well with tears as she talked about the campaign.

Huckabee says, "I think that most everybody that runs for president, you don't go through this unless you really believe that there is a need for the leadership that you're going to bring, and hopefully, you actually have ideas that you believe could help this country be better than it is, and I think all of us would agree, it needs to be better and we need to have major changes in this country to bring the country back together. And I don't know of anybody, Democrat or Republican, who doesn't deep
down believe that’s necessary."

Meanwhile, another Republican contender -- Rep. Ron Paul -- has finished taping his appearance on this evening's The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. NBC sent along a transcript that we've posted here.

They talk at length about Paul's exclusion from Sunday's Fox News Channel GOP debate. "Maybe they're intimidated. Maybe they're frightened. Maybe they don't want to hear the truth," Paul says of the folks at Fox.

Paul also says one reason that some GOP contenders have been on the offensive against Mitt Romney might be Romney's religion. From the transcript:

Paul: "I guess they figured he was the frontrunner, but he's coming down now. But you know, one thing I'm a little bit afraid of is that they might be doing that for religious reasons, and I don't like that. I disagree with Romney on some of the issues, and he's gone after me on the stage, but that shouldn't be the reason that he doesn't do well."

Leno: "Do you think that's the reason?"

Paul: "I think subtly there is a little bit of that. And I don't think that's right."

Both Letterman and Leno go on the air around 11:35 p.m. ET.
