Roadblocks And Secret Service Searches For Inauguration

ABC 7 News | January 7 2005

Washington (AP) - Businesses in the downtown area are revealing just how tight security will be for President Bush's second inauguration on January 20th.

Property owners, building tenants and private security officials tell The Washington Post that the Secret Service and DC police plan to erect roadblocks and screen pedestrians as far as three blocks from Pennsylvania Avenue amid the tightest security ever for a presidential swearing in.

They also say that vehicles will be barred from the blocks surrounding Pennsylvania Avenue.

An announcement on the restrictions is expected next week. Metro already has announced plans to close two stations.

The president of the Apartment and Office Building Association of Metropolitan Washington says there have been "significant changes" because this is the first inauguration since the September 2001 attacks on New York and Washington.

Harold Nelson praised security agencies for cooperating with hotels, property managers and businesses to make this as "palatable and comfortable for everyone." Nelson also is vice president of CarrAmerica, which owns ten buildings near the parade route.
