Cashless society will benefit ‘Big Brother’ government and banks but not consumers BRUCE C. MIZE What is the agenda of those who are promoting a cashless society? It is the opinion of this “cash talks” proponent that “Big Brother” government and banks want this society so they may track an individual’s every purchase and account for his or her time all day long and make money for banks. Is this what we want in this land of the free? A current TV ad for a bank debit card shows a smooth restaurant operation until a customer presents cash for his purchase. It has been my experience that the debit or credit card makes the delay. We have to wait for the computer to approve the purchase and then wait for the buyer to sign it — heaven forbid if a computer is down. A lot of young people cannot figure how much change to give back unless a register tells them what is owed. They are experts in operating computers and capable of Algebra II, but they cannot subtract 53 cents from $1 in their heads. And we are not even discussing identity theft here. Most people using cash have their money ready and have the correct change, especially in a small purchase.
