Doylestown Considering Surveillance Cameras

CBS / Lesley Van Arsdall | February 28 2006

DOYLESTOWN Big brother could soon be watching over one Bucks County town that's hoping to cut down on vandalism.

Borough council members in Doylestown are planning to vote on the issue of surveillance cameras Monday night.

Doylestown residents said that vandalism is a growing problem in their community.

“There’s graffiti, there’s been fires, there was a fire, a burning bush. I had to come out with a bucket, my neighbors came running out with a bucket. It's a problem,” said Lisa Polow.

Since May, there has been close to $50-thousand worth of damage to parks and businesses.

To prevent further damage, the borough is considering installing surveillance cameras in areas that have been hardest hit.

“There are two primary benefits; one is the deterrent factor, people are aware the cameras are there, there’s perhaps a tendency to behave, to moderate your behavior. The second is at the end of any incident, where we would be able to use that to solve the crime,” said Borough Manager John Davis.

Many cities are considering the system that has been successful in Wilmington, Delaware for several years.

Fifty cameras are in place in downtown Wilmington and monitored 24 hours a day by a private firm.

Residents in Doylestown believe the cameras would solve many problems, since teenagers and graffiti aren't the only issues.

“Drug trafficking, just selling drugs, using drugs back there, it's kind of sad,” said Jeannie.

The proposed six surveillance cameras would cost the borough $20-thousand.
