1,000 More Birds Dead in Dagestan

Mos News | February 21 2006

A thousand more bird deaths have been registered in Dagestan, Russia’s internal republic in North Caucasus.

The farm’s officials quoted by Interfax news agency said this had not been immediately confirmed to be due to the bird flu virus.

Bird flu was officially confirmed in Dagestan last week.

“Over a thousand chickens died Sunday in one of the farm’s departments. We called on experts who suggested that we destroy all chickens in this department, which is what we have done,” the farm’s director Marat Alkhlayev said.

“So far we cannot say that this is bird flu, but we wanted to ensure the sickness would not spread,” chief of Dagestan’s government veterinary committee Zaidin Djambulatov said.

18,000 chickens were killed at a poultry farm in Dagestan under suspicion of the bird flu virus.
