It's our right to carry on smoking

Dean Valler | February 17 2006

THE BAN on smoking in public places was greeted like watered-down beer at a Coventry social club.

The government may intend laying down the law to bring in a complete ban in pubs and clubs, but the regulars at Tile Hill Social Club aren't going to butt out without a wimper.

There is defiance in the smoky air at the Jardine Crescent venue, and talk of rebellion. Regular Andy McDonnell, aged 49, of Lyndale Road, Whoberley, said he would refuse to adhere to a ban on smoking - and wouldn't pay any fines.

Mr McDonnell, a plasterer who smokes more than 30 a day, said: "I would refuse to pay.

"It is my right to smoke when I'm having a drink and I am disgusted that the government wants to take my rights away. It amounts to a police state."
