Web encyclopedia articles 'vandalised'

Amy Iggulden / London Telegraph | February 10 2006

Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, is investigating the possibility of "article vandalism" by staff at the Houses of Parliament after it uncovered attempts to manipulate information by workers in Washington. Contributors to the website claim to have traced "flattering" and inaccurate changes to politicians' biographies to internet addresses at Capitol Hill.

The partisan editing by political staff is said to have included removing references to a plagiarism scandal, and replacing an unflattering biography with an officially sanctioned version.

Volunteer investigators are now examining the editing changes made to British political articles to establish any link with Westminster.

Wayne Saewyc, who is leading the project, said: "We are looking at the UK because it is the most internet aware government after the US."

Changes made to any of Wikipedia's 1.8 million articles can be traced to the computers that produced them by checking the internet protocol (IP) address. New entries can now be edited only by registered users.
