Reuters: Grenade Attack on Mexican Newspaper Office Near U.S. Border

NEW YORK Gunmen blasted their way into the offices of a newspaper near Mexico's border with the United States on Monday, tossing a grenade and gravely wounding a reporter.

A night shift reporter at El Manana in Nuevo Laredo, Jaime Orozco, is fighting for his life today, Reuters reports, based on a phone conversation with director Daniel Rosas. One of the gunmen tossed a grenade into the newsroom, he said. Orozco received five bullet wounds.

Nuevo Laredo is on the front line of a battle for control of the cross-border trade in drugs, and violence has increased since Mexican President Vicente Fox declared war on drug cartels a year ago. "Journalists covering drug-related violence on Mexico's northern border are constantly threatened and attacked," Reuters reports.
