Gates says censorship is useless

Nick Farrell / The Inquirer | February 3 2006

SOFTWARE King of the World Sir William Gates III has warned governments across the globe that it is useless to censor Internet sites.

King Willy said that once a country was plugged into the world wide web the ability to withhold information does not exist as information can be sent in emails or other more untrackable methods.

Speaking to a Microsoft-sponsored forum, Gates said that if there was a desire by the population to know something, it was going to get out.

This information would be a little surprising to human rights groups which have attacked Vole for caving into China's restrictions of free speech.

Last year Microsoft shut down the site of a popular Chinese blog at the request of the Chinese. More in the Sydney Morning Herald, here.
