Pakistani pleads guilty to reporting fake terror plot

Associated Press | December 10 2004

NEW YORK - A Pakistani man pleaded guilty Wednesday to lying to the FBI about a purported terrorist plot to destroy a New York City bridge.

Tanveer Choudhry, 32, who had a pending application for asylum in the United States, concocted the story to win favor from authorities, prosecutors said.

He admitted telling the FBI that a Palestinian customer at the Brooklyn gas station where he worked sought to enlist him in a terrorist attack. He claimed the customer and unidentified ``brothers'' wanted to hijack two gasoline trucks so they could ``burn the bridge.''

The customer offered Choudhry $5,000 to join the plot, according to his alleged story.

Choudhry admitted he lied after being given a polygraph test. He said he and the customer spoke about ``the possibility'' someone might attack the Verrazano Narrows Bridge, but never discussed a plot to do it themselves.

Choudhry faces as many as six months in prison and deportation to Pakistan when he is sentenced in federal court.
