TSA is considering a program under which it would give cash rewards to individuals who provide it with key information about crimes or transportation security violations.
The agency hasn't provided detailed information about the possible reward program, or explained the status of its internal decision-making process on this matter, but did disclose a bit of its thinking in a Federal Register notice it released on Aug. 26.
"TSA is in the process of developing a program to confer monetary or other recognition on individuals who provide valuable information to TSA about criminal acts or other violations relating to transportation security," said a single sentence in the notice, whose main thrust was to describe steps TSA will be taking to make it easier for members of the public to contact TSA to raise questions about problems, deficiencies or security vulnerabilities.
When asked by GSN to explain the details and status of this possible reward program, TSA provided the following comment:
"Passenger vigilance is one of many layers of security TSA depends on to keep the traveling public safe. Engaging the traveling public to report suspicious activity is a priority for TSA that will enhance our robust security system," wrote TSA public affairs officer Greg Soule. "The program referenced below is in the development stages and it is premature to discuss additional details as this time."
