Report:Italian journalist hostage killed
BAGHDAD, Aug. 26 (UPI) -- Iraqi militants have reportedly killed Italian journalist Enzo Baldoni, who had earlier been abducted, the BBC reported Thursday.
The Arabic TV network al-Jazeera claimed to have a video apparently showing the dead journalist, who had been in Iraq for a Milan-based magazine, the BBC said.
A group calling itself the Islamic Army in Iraq claimed it killed Baldoni after Italy refused to withdraw troops from Iraq, al-Jazeera said.
Italy's prime minister described the killing as an "act of barbarity."
The reporter went missing on Aug. 19 and his Iraqi driver's body was later found near the troubled city of Najaf.
Baldoni's captors had issued a threat through al-Jazeera
Tuesday saying Italy must pull out its 3,000 troops within 48 hours or they
could not guarantee the reporter's safety. Italy said it had no intention
of pulling out but was committed to securing the release of the journalist.
