Documents Unconvered Proving US Doctors Aided Torturers In Abu Ghurayb

Free Arab Voice | August 9 2004

Sources in the US-installed Iraqi puppet so-called “ministry of labor and social affairs” that supervises Abu Ghurayb prison have announced that they have discovered important documents proving that doctors and medical staff working with the American occupation troops participated in the torture of Iraqi prisoners in Abu Ghurayb prison.

The puppet “ministry” sources said that the medical employees provided medical files on those being called for interrogation to the interrogators who then used them to focus on the medical weakpoints of each prisoner. Most of the crimes committed in Abu Ghurayb prison were in fact carried out on the basis of medical documents. According to the Bahraini newspaper Akhbar al-Khalij, the medical records and statements indicate that the doctors provided falsified reports to cover up stitches they did of wounds inflicted during torture, of treatment they gave to prisoners who suffered collapses as a result of such treatment, and of visits they paid to sick prisoners whose reproductive organs were injured by torture.

The ministry sources indicated that the medical documents prove that two American doctors provided pain killers to a prisoner one of his hands had been cut off in the course of torture. But neither doctor reported the torture, or pointed out the reason why the prisoner lost his hand.

The documents show that a female nurse was called in to treat a prisoner in a state of panic as a result of intense torture. But she also failed to inform any official of the case.

The medical documents also attest to the fact that the cause of death of a number of prisoners was falsified by doctors who changed the “cause of death” from torture to “cardiovascular disease.”

For its part, the Iraqi Federation of Doctors has stated that the participation of American doctors in the torture of Iraqi detainees is a glaring violation of all international medial agreements, including the Tokyo World Medical Declaration of 1975 that prohibits doctors from taking part in any way in torture, as well as the Hippocratic Oath itself.

The Doctors Federation noted that racist and fascist regimes had involved doctors in the torture of patients, pointing out that the falsification of the medical records of tortured prisoners was also practiced in racist South Africa.
