Brown meets Bush for first time Reuters U.S. President George Bush met Britain's leader-in-waiting Gordon Brown for the first time on Friday just months before the Chancellor of the Exchequer is expected to succeed Prime Minister Tony Blair. With Blair expected to step down in late June and Brown the overwhelming favourite to succeed him, the relationship between Bush and the Chancellor will be crucial for Britain, a close U.S. ally. An aide to the finance minister described it as a "good meeting," which took place as Brown was calling on U.S. National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley while on a trip to Washington for the International Monetary Fund and World Bank meetings. The president happened to pop in just when Brown and Hadley were talking about trade and they chatted for about 30 minutes, the aide said. Blair has come under fire at home for his perceived closeness to Bush and Britain's role in the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq. With his ruling Labour party trailing badly in the polls, many left-wingers had hoped Brown would take a more sceptical approach to the United States. But Brown has often said that anti-Americanism is a mistake and has championed U.S. entrepreneurship, building up close ties with U.S. intellectuals and policy-makers in the process. Earlier on Friday, he met with former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan, who now acts as an economic adviser to him. He is also scheduled to meet with Democratic U.S. Senator Edward Kennedy on Saturday. --------------------------------------------------- Prison Planet.tv: The Premier Multimedia Subscription Package: Download and Share the Truth!
