US plans more internet monitoring laws Nick Farrell / The Inquirer | April 21 2006 THE MAN who judged the provisions of the Geneva convention as 'quaint', US Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is apparently planning new legislation to monitor the Internet. Gonzales is sending to Congress a legislative package that includes greater penalties and "improved cooperation" from Internet service providers. The laws will mean that ISPs will have to monitor their systems for child porn or else face criminal action for failing to report it. The move is likely to get the backs up of Civil Liberties groups who are concerned that it will give ISPs the new role of scanning personal data for illegal content. The concern is that the government already has enough laws to allow coppers to monitor web usage of those suspected of running online child paedophile rings. As part of the lead up to what will be a fairly controversial law, Gonzales is telling the world it needs these them to crack down on crimes against children. Gonzales said the public "does not yet appreciate the scope, the nature and the import of this criminal activity and the threat it poses to our kids." His emphasis on paedophiles, apparently there is an army of 50,000 on the Internet at anyone time, seems to be working. The report on CNN , here, nearly fails to mention Gonzales' new legal package. Instead it concentrates on his graphic attack on child web porn. The article seems to accept without question one of Gonzales comments that one of every five children online is solicited. There is no mention of where Gonzales got his figures. --------------------------------------------------- Prison Planet.tv: The Premier Multimedia Subscription Package: Download and Share the Truth!
